A function is a predefined procedure that has been incorporated into Excel since its manufacture and that helps us to perform calculations using the data we provide as its arguments. In order to use Excel functions correctly, we need to have a good understanding of each of its parts, such as its name and its mandatory and optional arguments.

Nobody can change the behavior of Excel functions, because their operation is already programmed into the tool, but we can learn to use the wide range of functions available.

Microsoft has created different categories to organize the functions and below you will find a list of them. By clicking on any of the categories below, the list of corresponding functions will be displayed.

In addition to the aforementioned categories, you will find a category known as Compatibility. The functions that are in this category can be used in your current version of Excel, but Microsoft recommends to stop doing it because it will have created a new equivalent function, which will offer greater precision and will have a name that will better reflect its use.

You should only use the features in the Compatibility category if you need to create a book that needs to be backward compatible. Otherwise, the recommendation is to use those Excel functions that have replaced the functions of the Compatibility category.
